Heat Stress

Sassafras, Sassafras albidum

The intense heat and drought is having an impact. Many of the plants are going dormant but some are dying. Here is a picture I took this morning of a Sassafras tree showing signs of fall color as it is preparing to go dormant a few months early.

Is there a way of telling which are dying?

I’m not certain how to tell other than wait till next year and see what leafs out.

My serviceberry tree has several branches with brown, dry leaves and several other branches with healthy green leaves. I assumed those branches were dead but guess I should wait until spring before pruning them.
