Coolest Caterpillar

Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus) on a Spicebush Leaf (Lindera benzoin)

Merv Wallace suggested that now might be a good time to look for the spectacular Spicebush Swallowtail Caterpillar. He’s had luck looking for curled leaves on Spicebush or Sassafras. We have a lot of Spicebush or Sassafras at the PGT and we have a lot of these butterflies so I thought it would be easy finding the caterpillars. After a couple hours I could only find one. I have to say this is the coolest caterpillar I’ve ever seen!

Yes. Isn’t that cool! Someone told me that the entire look was supposed to mimic a tropical tree snake.
